When I did this one years ago, you could get closer. It was about 10 miles roundtrip with 3000 or so gain. It was a lovely hike. Now you cannot access it from that point. You could camp at Myrtle Lake. It didn't look super exciting, and camping is limited. There was no water up at the old lookout site, but it would be an amazing place to camp.
