Destination Details for Park Butte

Northwest WA

My father took care of this one for 40 years. There is a plaque on the back of the door to commemorate his service. I remember helping out as a child. We normally went there 2-3 times a summer to work on it/open and close it for the season. I have so many memories! I haven't stayed there in years as it's just too popular and even if I were the first, others would expect to stay there with me. I now go summer weekdays only to check it and camp below at the pass or near the Railroad Grade. The only navigation issue is at the fork with the Scott Paul trail. Every time I am there I have to tell people they are on the wrong trail as not so many take the SP trail. PLEASE remember camping is not allowed at the tarns! Camping is crowded on weekends, and I often see people ignoring the signs not to camp at the tarns, and they are often camping in areas that are not established sites. It is sad to see the overuse of the area. It is magical but not when there are so many people. Be warned = weekends are crazy.

Lookout Structure Details for Park Butte: Open to the Public
Skagit Alpine Club/open to public

This one is incredibly popular! Never plan on staying in it as it is really tough to get it. Also, do NOT camp near tarns. People are ignoring the signs not to camp and destroying the fragile environment. There is no water source at lookout once the snow melts. Your closest source is the tarns or just below the tarns. The bed has not been updated since we took care of it in 1960s and 1970s so mattress bits stick out on you. You'll need a pad. There is no heat source so go prepared, but definitely have a backup tent etc to sleep in camping spots. Weekends it is tough to find a site where you are allowed to camp as people are everywhere. You need to allow all visitors into the lookout during the day as some have tried to keep people out when they are camped there.
