I've been there a few times. It is not a hard hike, but the magenta paintbrush in summer are amazing and views from the Knob are quite good. I don't recall any water for backpacking or even what flat areas there might be for staying overnight. I've always looked at it as a day trip. There is a much harder route to it that comes up from 410. I've always gone up the road to the parking up there, but sometime for a good workout, it would be fun to do the longer, steeper approach. You can likely snowshoe that one in winter or come up the road for regular trail in late spring and snowshoe from however far you get.
