Destination Details for Red Mtn. (Kittitas)

Central WA

We saw no-one on our visit. This hike shares a trailhead with Thorp Mtn LO, and it seems all the cars were heading there. We got up to Little Joe Lake and had lunch and a rest as it had steep sections with some blowdown. After Little Joe Lake, the fun started as in the trail disappears. There is a cairn right where it disappears. Keep going straight through those pine trees and look for signs of trail. Lots of blowdown and overgrowth, but we found another cairn and eventually found good trail after maybe a quarter mile of following the trail on Gaia and looking for signs. It gives no quarter as it heads steeply up. It does finally do some switchbacks. A trail that showed going right at the saddle below the West peak is not there anymore. We looked but didn't see it. Maybe if we'd gone up the ridge a bit we might have seen it, but only the trail that doesn't show on Gaia actually existed. We went to the lookout site. Dave was exhausted so I followed trail a bit farther towards real summit - lovely saddle with views both ways. It looked like some exposure to make the summit so I didn't want to do it alone. I thought it was even harder to see the path in the blowdown section on the way back, but I knew which way the lake was and got back on the trail. There was one developed campsite at the lake, but I read on WTA that getting water out of it can be difficult as it's marshy and to get to actual water can be tricky. You might be able to do this as a snowshoe this direction, but I suspect it's better to go from the other side - trailhead off 4600 for that. I doubt roads to this trailhead cleared in winter.
