We did this as a snowshoe. Gate was closed so we had a long walk. I don't remember the exact elevation gain from our starting point. I don't think it is necessarily usually that long to get there. I am not sure you could do it as a backpack as I don't remember what the use rules are for the area. I remember we were a bit disappointed in the small lookout after doing all that work to get there!
