I have only done this as a snowshoe and no doubt you can drive much more of the way in the summer. I don't know if the gate we encountered 3 miles or so in is open in summer or not. There is a communication tower up there and if you walk around, you can find a viewpoint. I've always thought it would be cool to go back and explore where some of the other roads go but never have. I haven't been back for at least a decade.
