You can start farther down the road or take the new trails so the elevation given is for walking up from the locked gate not too far from the lookout. I haven't tried to get there via some of the new trails. I've walked from far down on the road and taken a couple bike trails in the snow. It's a long drive for us so we don't go often, but it is a wonderful view from the upper road and the lookout itself.
